HEPA Filtration FAQs

What does the term HEPA mean?

HEPA is an acronym for “High Efficiency Particulate Air”.  HEPA is a type of filter that can trap the smallest particles (0.3 microns in diameter). To meet the minimum requirements of a HEPA filter, it must be tested and certified to prove that it will remove at least 99.97% of particles 0.3 microns in diameter from the air passing through the filter.

How are HEPA filters certified?

Certification could be done by the manufacturer and by a professional in the field as a part of a complete system test. IEST – the Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technologies provides the testing standards relating to HEPA filters.

How do HEPA filters work?

The ultra-fine, glass-fiber medium captures microscopic particles that are 25 to 50 times smaller than we can see and that can easily pass through other filters.

Why would I install a HEPA system vs. another type of air cleaner?

HEPA systems are designed and tested to extract the smallest particles out of the air. They are used in homes, beauty salons, and even in airplanes, laboratories, and hospitals because they are the most powerful tool of air filtration.
